When we talk about workplace ergonomics, the chair is often the first thing that comes to mind. A good chair matters, but I believe easy positioning of your monitor is equally important, if not more so.
Start with the correct desk setup.
Screen position has a direct effect on posture. A laptop works well when you are away from your desk, but at a permanent workstation it should effectively serve as the computer itself. At a minimum, the setup should include a separate keyboard, mouse and monitor, with the monitor mounted on a dynamic monitor arm.
Why a dynamic monitor arm matters.
A dynamic monitor arm lets you reposition the screen easily up, down, forward, backward or sideways, as your needs change throughout the day. Unlike a standard monitor arm, it does not require repeated manual adjustment and tightening.
The risk of working directly from a laptop.
Too many people still spend long periods working directly from a laptop at their desk. This can force the neck and shoulders into an awkward position, causing strain that may lead to injury over time. In our own offices, we have seen people become pain-free and productive again after making these straightforward changes and moving away from working directly on laptops at their desks.
Movement is part of good ergonomics.
Good ergonomics is not about sitting perfectly still. It is about supporting natural movement so that people can work comfortably, productively and safely. If you have not yet made these simple ergonomic changes, you may be surprised by the difference they can make to your people and, ultimately, to your business.
